Could a car really avoid a collision by itself?

2 scientists from the states are currently designing a system that will help prevent car crashes by taking control of the vehicle before the collision occurs.

Domitilla Del Vecchio and Rajeev Verma from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) are studying drivers actions prior to crashing including car positioning, braking and acceleration and are combining them with previously recorded driving behaviors. This will help the system decide the best course of action to avoid an imminent accident and perform the actions itself.

Two cars with the Intelligent Transportation System or ITS for short, could also communicate with one another wirelessly to make sure they do not make the same decisions making sure the vehicles avoid each other.

Out of 100 tests carried out with scaled down cars, 97 have proved successful in avoiding a crash but seriously would people feel safe in letting a computer take control away their used cars at high speed or in built up areas?

I am going to say no for now but who knows maybe one day we won't need to control our cars at all!
