Reinventing the wheel

German scientists have been experimenting with the use of a touch screen incorporated into a steering wheel with some positive results.

The wheel will still be used to steer in the conventional manner with the touch screen offering access to a variety of common in car equipment including entertainment and driving assistance controls. The main thinking behind the design is to ease the use of these systems, keeping the drivers hands on the wheel and their eyes on the road. Though the wheel is still only in early development a study on 12 people has shown that using it has reduced distraction from the road significantly.

This could be a massive step forward for in car control systems and an exciting one at that but don't expect to see the wheel in your new VW Golf anytime soon as there are bound to be some stumbling blocks along the way.
