Volvo design new animal detection system

News out of Volvo is that they are developing an animal detection system to try and help reduce accidents in rural areas.

Using the same radar and camera technology that is used in their Pedestrian Detection system, a warning sound will be emitted if an animal is detected in the road, and the car will automatically brake to slow down or stop the car if the driver fails to react.

The Volvo engineers have been studying the movement patterns of various animals to help the system recognise different species such as deers and horses as these larger creatures tend to be the greatest risk to road users.

With the majority of these types of accidents occurring in bad light, dusk and at night, the animal detection system is being designed to work to its optimum in these conditions.

I have seen the Pedestrian Detection system in action and to great effect but with the unpredictability of animals I think this new system may take a while to appear at car dealerships.
