2012 Dodge Caliber

A redesigned Dodge Caliber compact car is near the top of the to-do list for the new Chrysler Group LLC and its Italian partner, Fiat Auto. The replacement, which may get a new name, is expected to start sale in calendar 2011 as an early 2012 model, timing that would make it the American automaker's first post-bankruptcy product to reach consumers. Despite dual design citizenship, the new compact will be produced at one of Chrysler's remaining plants in North America, though the choice is apparently not decided yet.

Various sources indicate the 2012 Dodge Caliber will be built on Fiat's C-Evo platform, a new architecture that can be varied somewhat in length and width to host a variety of "C-segment" vehicles, meaning compact cars and crossover SUVs of the same general size as the Ford Focus and new 2011 Chevrolet Cruze. Designed for both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, C-Evo gets its first outing with the 2011 Alfa Romeo Milano, a sporty 4-door hatchback from the Fiat-owned upscale brand famous for sports cars. The new Caliber will reportedly be sold only as a 4-door sedan, unlike Milano and today's Caliber, but we think a hatchback might be reinstated at some point to woo younger "active lifestyle" buyers attracted to the likes of the Kia Soul, Nissan Cube, and Scion xB. Whatever the body styles, all models should be front-wheel drive.

Styling for the 2012 Dodge Caliber will be fashioned by Chrysler designers in Auburn Hills, Michigan, though probably with input from Fiat's team in Turin. The 2012 Charger SRT8 gets a stouter rear axle with a 3.06 ratio to cope with the higher output of the 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 engine. The rumored eight speed transmission probably won’t appear in the 2012 model, so Allpar advises that the SRT8 will stick with a five-speed automatic transmission for now. The transmission includes a sport mode, although the specifics of programming and operation have yet to be revealed. The suspension gets active damping, with driver-selectable Auto and Sport modes.

On the inside, the driver benefits from a climate control system that includes dual zones, a pollen filter and a humidity sensor. The front and rear seats are heated, as is the steering wheel, and the front seats are also ventilated. Acoustic glass with a solar mitigating film is used all around, ensuring that the cockpit of the SRT8 is a cool, quiet place from which to terrorize other drivers at stoplights. 2012 Dodge Avenger RT

Dodge reveals the new 2012 Avenger RT, ahead of its world debut at the 2011 New York International Auto Show. We'll start with everybody's favorite part when it comes to Dodge's RT models - the engine. The 2012 Avenger RT is powered by the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine (283 hp), mated to a six-speed automatic transaxle gearbox. Dodge says the 2012 Avenger R/T is able to offer an EPA fuel consumption of up to 19 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway.

Some of the most interesting features of the 2012 Dodge Avenger RT are the center-mounted tachometer, the performance-inspired interior and exterior and the stiffer suspension system. Dodge increased the roll stiffness of the 2012 Avenger RT by 18%, and spring rates by 17% in the front and more than 12% in the rear.

Front strut damping rates are increased 15%, rear strut damping rates are increased almost 20% and the rear stabilizer bar diameter is 2 mm larger, increased from 19 mm to 21 mm.

It also adds some racing kit, including a carbon fiber lift-off hood with functional scoop, seats styled after the Dodge Viper’s, polycarbonate door windows, light-weight cooling system, manual steering, light-weight front brakes and a cable-operated throttle linkage and pedal.

2011 Hennessey Venom GT

Venom GT is a mid-engined supercar incorporating the passenger-cell structure of the Lotus Exige within a bespoke space frame chassis designed specifically to accept modified versions of GM’s 6.2-liter LS9 V-8 engine. While the previous images of a matte-gray prototype made it tough to make out the Venom GT’s visage, the silver paint on car #01 shows off a menacing shape. It also reveals a surprising amount of actual Exige parts, including not just the cabin structure but also its headlamps, taillamps, doors, and be-snorkeled roof.

Venom GT’s proportions are wildly different from the Exige’s, stretching nearly 34 inches farther stem to stern, with a full nine inches of newfound width, too. The fenders have swollen into billowing pontoons and there’s a longer, more canted snout. Air ducts around the car have been enlarged to accommodate the GT’s substantially greater cooling and air-management requirements, and a huge, retractable rear wing has been added. An adjustable suspension can snug the Venom GT’s body 2.4 inches lower over the fat, 235/30 front and 335/30 rear Michelin PS2 rubber, which wrap around a stunning set of 20-inch rims. Still, from any angle, it’s tough not to think modified Exige first, true exotic second. Indeed, according to one of our staffers, looking at the Venom GT is “just like looking at an Exige, only through a fisheye lens.

Venom GT packing the twin-turbocharged LS9 is roughly 700 pounds heavier than an Exige (the 725-hp supercharged version saves 42 pounds versus the turbo car). Hennessey had hoped to bring it in with a curb weight of 2400 pounds, but, honestly, what’s a few hundred pounds when you’re bombin’ around with two to three times the horsepower of a BMW M3 and a power-to-weight ratio of an unfathomably low 2.2 pounds per horsepower? Indeed, a Venom GT with a Suburban strapped to its roof could probably out-accelerate most sports cars.

Hennessey estimates that the 1030-hp car should be able to hit 62 mph in 2.9 seconds, and then double that velocity within 7.0 seconds. While top-speed testing has yet to be completed, Hennessey tells us that its computer models predict the ability to reach 262 mph, which would render it one of the fastest “production” cars ever. Venom GT #01 could be even faster, ordered as it was in the so-called “top-tier” 1200-hp twin-turbo trim, which produces 1135 lb-ft of torque. Hennessey plans to verify its claims sometime next year, we are told.

Venom GT bit Hennessey chose not to divulge until now is the price, which starts at $725,000 for the supercharged model, $850,000 for the 1030-hp twin-turbo version, and a cool million if you want all 1200 ponies. Of course that includes an individually tailored interior, a two-year/24,000-mile warranty, and, presumably, a sound system better than the crappy one found in the Exige.

2011 Dodge Charger

Dodge is now calling the new Charger a four-door fastback coupe design. And aesthetically, I think it looks brilliant. It’s far more aggressive and inspiring with its sleeker sheet metal and reminisces on the classic, pronounced shoulder lines of muscle cars from the past.

Again, the 3.6L Pentastar V6 will be making its way under the hood as well as the traditional 5.7L HEMI V8. The V6 will offer 292hp and 260 lb-ft of torque in the Charger, 42 more horsepower than the outgoing 3.5L V6. And of course, the head honcho 5.7L HEMI will be churning out 370hp while offering 25 mpg on the highway. The 5.7L is equipped with FuelSaver Technology, which is virtually a cylinder-deactivation system, allowing the engine to run on four-cylinders instead of all eight at highway cruising speeds.

The chassis and suspension have been fully reworked, making the Mercedes-Benz W210 E-Class based LX platform stiffer than the outgoing model and the new suspension allows for the 5.7L-equipped model to achieve 0.90g on the skidpad.

The Charger will be offered in base SE, R/T and R/T AWD trims with additional “lifestyle” packages to fit each buyer’s needs and desires.

2011 Dodge Avenger

2011 Dodge Avenger sedan gets a new drivetrain, new suspension pieces and new front and rear clips as Chrysler tries to rehab the image of this rental-car mainstay.

The Avenger's sheetmetal carries over virtually unchanged. Change is good, but the Avenger already had a lock on brand unity with its mini-Charger stance and upkicked rear quarters. The headlamps and taillamps are simplified, but the crosshairs on the Avenger's grille trade metallic ribs for meatier bright-and-black pieces. Inside, the Avenger gets a new dash, which looks great, with convincing quantum leaps in style and materials. The Avenger's dash cap is sculpted a bit more over its gauges; the climate controls are streamlined, and rings of bright and matte metallic plastic are fine contrasts to most of the soft-touch plastic. The lower half of the Avenger's dash seems to wear lower-grade plastic than the 200, and some of the same carryover gauges and buttons are more noticeable, surrounded by better-quality bits.

A 2.4-liter, 173-horsepower four-cylinder carries over from last year's Avenger as the base engine in the 2011 Dodge Avenger, but the new 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 is new across the board to the Chrysler lineup. The new V-6 drops 283 horsepower in the front-drive Avenger's engine bay, with 260 pound-feet of torque twisting through a six-speed automatic transmission. On the spec sheet, that's higher output than the new Sonata 2.0T turbo, the Fusion V-6 and the Regal GS. In practice, the smooth windup of the six just can't be controlled with the Avenger's small-car strut-and-multilink suspension. Mash the gas hard and the Avenger weaves on takeoff with corresponding steroidal twitches of torque steer before it takes a straight-ahead set. Chrysler's new six-speed automatic isn't the best companion for the power either.

The Avenger still has hydraulic power steering, augmented by a lower ride height in front than in back, which leaves it with more natural feedback and bite in its steering than most other mid-size sedans. Somehow, the effort still comes across as somewhat uninspired when matched with the powertrain issues, however.

The 2011 Dodge Avenger has roughly the same interior space found in the 2011 Hyundai Sonata, or the latest Ford Fusion and Subaru Legacy, some of TheCarConnection's most highly rated four-doors. Head room and leg room are equal to or better than most, though the Avenger's trunk is on the small side of the scale. But the Avenger suffers some for the mini-Charger style—especially in the back seat. While the Sonata's tall, airy greenhouse lets in plenty of light, the Avenger's tall shoulders and low roofline—and dark trim most everywhere inside save for the upholstery—feels more confining, even though its flat but wide front seats have enough acreage for the target market.
